Dirk Hays received his BFA from Auburn University in Visual Communications in 1982. Before he began tattooing in 1994, Dirk worked in a variety of art-related fields, including advertising. He has helped design and build puppets and sets for critically acclaimed adult-oriented puppet shows at the Center for Puppetry Arts, as well as co-directing and performing in some of the shows. In addition, Dirk's whimsical sculptures have garnered a dedicated following in Atlanta, where he has participated in group and solo exhibitions.
